Volvo is following Tesla in megacasting large parts to reduce weight, increase efficiency, and increase driving range.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, is known for being an inventor and states that the concept of "Megacasting"

He discovered after some investigation that there is actually no size restriction.

Naturally, the concept of employing die-cast components in the manufacture of automobiles is not new.

The size of the casting is novel. Consider a vehicle with three castings, each covering the full underneath.

Luckily for Musk, an Italian business in Brescia was already developing a Giga press.

The business IDRA was already aware of the possibilities of lightweight structural megacasting in electric vehicle applications.

In 2017, IDRA began construction of the OL 6100, its first Giga press, motivated by the need to create huge

This die-cast press is 60 feet long by 24 feet wide, and 18 feet high. It has a rated clamping force of 6,000 metric

This enables Tesla to cast a Model Y or Model 3's front or rear underbody in a single piece.

Or, one of these components can be made in two halves using a multi-cavity machine.

Tesla plans to make the dystopian Cybertruck in this fashion, therefore this will be useful!
